On Saturday 29th March 2014 members of Tutbury in Bloom joined with members of Tutbury Residents Association at the Community Garden in Wakefield Avenue to take part in a joint spring tidy up.
The hard working volunteers soon had the garden weed free and looking much smarter. The Community Garden is open every day for local residents to enjoy and on Saturday in the sunshine the spring flowers were lovely to see.
Tutbury in Bloom members were using this community action morning as the Official Launch of Tutbury into the National Heart of England Campaign 2014, the judging day has already been chosen as Monday 28th July 2014. Tutbury was awarded a Gold last year for The Small Town Category and Liz Staples Chairman of Tutbury in Bloom stated ‘ Team Members know how important it is for us to show the judges year round activities, not just the 2 hours on judging day’.
In Bloom members were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress who were there to help Launch the Tutbury 2014 Campaign and also watch members of the team (Malcolm Wardle Chairman of the Residents Association can be seen in the photo) sow poppy seed into the tidied flower borders. You can also read about it in the Burton Mail.
The Theme this year of the National In Bloom Campaign is ‘Growing for Gold’ and the team are growing sunflowers to plant round the village as part of the campaign.
However 2014 is also the 100th year since the start of the First World War and to Commemorate this event team members will be sowing poppy seed round the village as well.
The In Bloom Team are always looking for more volunteers to join them.
This Saturday will see the members working on the Holts Lane flower bed and there is a litter pick planned for Saturday 3rd May, meet at 10 am in the Duke Street Car park.
Future events include a hanging basket/container competition for local residents and businesses to enter, judging day will be 15th July, residents are asked to look out for the posters and leaflets which will be available in June.
In Bloom members are grateful that Hayes Fabrications Ltd have again sponsored this event enabling the winners of the four categories to be awarded Vouchers to the value of £10. There will be a new category this year ‘the most original use of a recycled container’ so we are hoping that residents will take up this challenge with some innovative ideas.
