Floral Feature Competition 2014

On the morning of the 15th July Liz Staples the chairman of Tutbury in Bloom, Sue Norris and Janice Sherratt, members of the Tutbury in Bloom Team welcomed the Mayor Cllr Ron Clarke and the Mayoress to judge the Floral Feature Competition that the team had organised for Tutbury residents and businesses to enter.

The number of categories that people could enter had increased this year, and it was pleasing to see this had resulted in an increase in the number of entries to 33.

There were 16 entries for the hanging  basket and container sections by local businesses.

8 residents entered hanging baskets and 6 resident entered containers with 3 young people entering hanging baskets.

A further new category this year was the best use of a recycled container and it was pleasing to see 6 entries for this.

The Mayor enjoyed visiting and judging the entries with those on the High Street and surrounding area being visited on foot before taking to the cars for those further away. At the end of the tour everyone retired to the Dog and Partridge for coffee. The Mayor found it very difficult to make a final decision on the winners and thought there were several close seconds. The Mayor said ‘I would have liked to have awarded a prize to all the participants and I especially liked the wall planters on the school wall in Burton Street’. These wall planters are organised and looked after by members of the In Bloom Team, so were not eligible to be part of the competition. He thought the standard of entry this year was very high with much thought being given to the recycled containers.

In the end the Mayor made his decision (photos below):

The In Bloom Team really appreciated the time the Mayor and Mayoress gave to judge the competition and all the winners will receive Certificates and vouchers to the value of £10. The Team would like to thank Hayes Engineering for sponsoring the competition and the certificates and vouchers will be awarded on 28th July by Roger Bache and Nicola Clarke, the Heart of England in Bloom Judges when they visit Tutbury for Judging Day. (Tutbury is being entered for the 4th year into the Heart of England Campaign in the Small Town Category, last year Tutbury was awarded Gold)
