Chairman’s Report 2013-2014

Another successful year seems to have flown by with the first AGM held last January 2013.

Regular monthly meetings have been held at the Institute since then.

Members attended the Local In Bloom Federation meetings, these have been organised by ESBC to help all the local In Bloom Groups .

Tutbury launched its 2013 Campaign with a Litter Pick on 6th April, which was attended by the Mayor Cllr Len Milner and we had a good write up in the Burton Mail. With thanks to Rick Nuth our Web Site was also launched at the same time.

The theme this year was edible plants and ESBC were able to offer nasturtium plants and also free wall planters if a site could be found for them.

By the end of May the route had been decided on and also a site agreed for the planters, (school wall) with members agreeing that they would be watered by volunteers. Roundabout at top of by-pass to have improved planting and also the Tutbury Bed with further discussion to be had over what to do with the Tutbury Bed.

The local Tutbury Scout Group asked us to join them in a Community Project in June and a very successful make-over of the Holts Lane flower boarders took place on 6th June.  The write up in the Burton Mail was poor but it has got the word out there and the Beavers and parents who took part in the litter pick on the Saturday morning 8th  June enjoyed themselves. Members then retired to the church for a well earned coffee and cake.

Another successful Hanging Basket Competition was organised and took place on 11th July. Janice must again be thanked for all her hard work in getting the posters out and displayed and members must be thanked as over 1000 flyers were delivered. These were again printed by ESBC at no cost to the In Bloom Team. The Mayor Cllr Michael Rodgers enjoyed himself on judging day and the weather was much kinder this time. Thanks must go to Hayes Engineering for sponsoring the Competition.

The weekend before judging day saw working parties taking place on the Friday night at Holts Lane and the Community Garden with over 30 lavender plants being planted round the War Memorial in the Churchyard and a successful litter pick on the Saturday morning.

Judging Day went very well, the judges were Nicola Clarke and Mike Garwood, the judges seem to like our presentation and must thank Sue Norris for all the work she put in on the Portfolio.. We were lucky again with the sponsorship by Dog and Partridge for the refreshments and Trent and Dove with supplying mini-bus and driver. ESBC had come up trumps again with their last minute tidy up. The last minute change to the Route to take in Tutbury Fire Station, with Bill Beck went very well and should be included again.

Members Liz Staples, Malcolm Wardle and Janice Sherratt attended the In Bloom Awards Ceremony at Drayton Manor Park, Tamworth. Tutbury was awarded GOLD, in the small town category, points now 171 previous 164.

Joint bulb planting organised with Civic Society on 26th October went very well with 50 kilo bulbs donated by ESBC, good publicity. A working party took place on 9th November at the community garden. More needs to be done in Spring.  A further successful litter pick held on 1st December.

Two successful applications for funding were completed this year. WASP monies are available for 6 extra banners and over £600 was granted via the local county councillor community fund for 12 planted up hanging baskets, plants and new liners for the wall planters. Further set of hanging baskets available from the Open Gardens Committee so they can be planted up ready for the summer.

Team must also consider future of entering Tutbury in further years and make up of Tutbury Team as current Chairman will be stepping down in 2015.
